This isn’t a pest control post; we’re of the live and let live mentality here at Western Tent. No, this is about the method used to create great looking, ultra bright, backlit graphics on your canopy.
Here’s how it works. We cover a canopy frame in your favourite colour of vinyl material, apply a stencil of your logo over top, and within those specific boundaries, chemically wash away the vinyl’s colour to white allowing the background light to flood through.
Are you still with me?
I’ll show you an example.
Let’s say you’ve got a canopy that looks like this. Maybe your graphics are painted, maybe they’re vinyl decal. Either way, they look great in the daytime. However, when night comes, they’re really tough to see.
Now take a look at the eradicated graphics. I know, right? Amazing! You might be able to see those graphics from the ISS (that’s the International Space Station for those who don’t have their geek on).Eradi-Lite and Cooley are two of the more common brand names in eradicable vinyl available in the industry, though there are others, and there are a variety of colours to choose from. We can also spice things up further by adding translucent vinyl decal to the eradicated space, giving you a highly visible spectrum of colour which will tie in your branding.
Eradication. It’s a good thing!
Well, to be fair, we can’t always fix it.
Sometimes we need to replace your sad & broken awning. Your holey tent. Your punctured canopy.
You get the idea.
And here’s the best part – we can collaborate with you and your insurance company!
So yes, we know storms can be a pain.
We know the last thing you wanted to today was to cry over the dings and tears in your state-of-the-art patio awning that covers your 10 person, LED bedazzled, house-music pumpin’ hot tub.
We know that you’re worried your customers will never find you because your lovely canopy is tattered and torn, completely obscuring that logo you dreamt up while trekking with Yeti in Nepal.
And we know that you can’t allow that beautiful, young, and stylish couple, with 500 of their closest friends and family, most of whom have travelled hundreds or thousands of kilometers to be there, to say their vows under a ripped and sorry looking wedding tent.
No. Instead you’re going to call your insurance company. And then you’re going to call the experts.

The Calgary Stampede looms large on this city’s event schedule. Beyond the organizers themselves, most businesses prepare for the occasion somehow. Store windows are painted with cowboy themes, bales of hay are strewn about, and jeans, buckles, and hats abound. It’s a festive time for most but it’s the busiest time of year for those of us who supply the goods!
From installing party tents to supplying drivers’ chuckwagon covers, our staff work long hours making sure that our piece of the puzzle is firmly in place. We’re thankful to have such a diligent crew.
Today is Day 1 of 10 on the grounds. We hope you take an opportunity to see what the city has to offer during the event, not only at the Exhibition, but throughout the city. I think you’ll see a real coming-together of people, great community spirit, and some very lively entertainment.
Enjoy yourselves out there! Yeehaw!
If it’s not a Pancake Breakfast it’s a Stampede BBQ!
2015 is just around the corner and that will mark our 128th year in business! While I myself am a mere babe by comparison, that’s a pretty significant number considering Calgary was founded only 3 years prior to Western Tent’s inception. So, given that New Year’s is a time of reflection, and that we’ve had some sort of computer glitch that won’t allow me to access my files, this seems like the perfect time to look back at the history of our company and to look forward at what 2015 may bring.
Philip Dorland Sprung came to Calgary with a wave of new settlers. Soon after he partnered with W.A. Denby, and together they created Western Tent & Mattress Co., a company which catered to the expanding needs of the booming city. Manufacturing everything from tents & teepees to cots & mattresses, Western Tent was an integral cog in outfitting the new town of Calgary.
Today the company is called Sprung’s Western Tent & Awning Ltd. Family owned & operated, Western Tent is currently overseen by its fourth generation of Sprungs. While tents and teepees are still key components in the product line, much of today’s trade is in residential awnings, commercial canopies, garage-like shelters and sail shades.
As for the future? Well, my crystal ball is on the fritz but I think we’re likely to see an increase in lifestyle products. Outdoor living has come to Calgary and despite the chill in the air, we’re seeing more and more outdoor kitchens, games/play spaces and pools. Certainly bars and restaurants are making their patios friendlier in our short summers by adding retractable covers to their pergolas, wind-proof panels to patio walls, and infrared heaters to their outdoor entertainment places.
And let’s face it, signage is always important, even in an economy of slumping oil prices. Let’s turn that frown upside-down! It’s more important that ever to be noticed in the marketplace and bright bold signage is a great way to do it.
We’re an optimistic bunch. 2015 is bound to be a tremendous year and we look forward to working with some great clients on some outstanding projects! Let’s hear it for 128 years!
